News from the Bell Tower

On Saturday 7th July, St James Garlickhythe is playing host to the final of The Ringing World National Youth Contest. This annual event held in different cities each year sees 22 teams of young ringers from all over the country compete for the Whitechapel Trophy. The teams will spend the morning fighting it out at eliminator towers elsewhere in London before the final 8 come through to St James Garlickhythe, the purpose of which would be to ring the Royal Jubilee Bells in as rhythmic and error free way as possible. The Yorkshire Tykes will be battling to retain the trophy they won last year in Birmingham. The event is to be covered by Blue Peter, whose presenter, Lindsay Russell, will be taught the basics in bell handling as part of their coverage. The whole event is organised as a festival for young ringers, and seeing the various teams and their supporters wandering through the streets of the City with such enthusiasm for ringing gives some assurance for the future of this art.
